Wisconsin Permit Test FAQ
Plain-English answers about the Wisconsin permit test, from the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook. Always check the official guide for the current rules.
The tests
How many questions are on the Wisconsin permit test?
There are two written tests. The highway signs test has 15 questions and you need 12 right; the knowledge test has 50 questions and you need 40 right. Both pass marks are 80%. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 1)
Do I need an appointment for the knowledge test?
No. The signs and knowledge tests are walk-in; allow about 45 minutes for the knowledge test and arrive well before the service center closes. Only the road test needs an appointment. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 1–2)
Can I take the Wisconsin knowledge test at home?
Applicants aged 15 to 17 may take it online, for a fee; at a DMV customer service center it is free. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 1)
Your instruction permit
How old do I have to be for a Wisconsin instruction permit?
At least 15, enrolled in driver education with behind-the-wheel training, and with an adult sponsor if you are under 18. From 18 you need only to pass the tests and the vision screening. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 5)
Who can ride with me while I drive on a permit?
A licensed driver with at least two years of experience and a regular license sits beside you: an instructor or parent, guardian or spouse aged 19+, or anyone 21+ (with a parent's written OK if you're under 18). After dark it must be an instructor or a licensed person aged 25+. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 5)
Your first license
When can I get a probationary license?
At 16 or older, after at least six months with your permit, driver education finished and 50 practice hours (10 at night) signed off by your sponsor. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 6)
What are the GDL limits on a probationary license?
For nine months (or until you turn 18), limits on passengers apply, and between midnight and 5 a.m. you may drive alone only between home, school and work. Breaking them or a moving violation adds six months. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 6–7)
