The knowledge test
How many questions are on the Ohio permit test?
40 multiple-choice questions. You pass with 75 percent, which is 30 right. (Ohio Driver Manual, Section 1)
What happens if I fail the knowledge test?
Wait one day and try again. In person you can retake it as often as you need, once a day; online you get two tries in six months. (Ohio Driver Manual, Section 1)
Where can I take the knowledge test?
Online through BMV Online Services, at a BMV Driver Exam Station, or at select Deputy Registrar License Agencies. (Ohio Driver Manual, Section 1)
Your permit (TIPIC)
How old do I need to be for an Ohio permit?
You can take the vision screening and knowledge test at 15 and a half, then buy the TIPIC. (Ohio Driver Manual, Section 1)
Who must ride with me on a TIPIC?
Under 16: a parent, guardian, custodian, driving instructor or an adult 21+ acting as a parent, in the front passenger seat. At 16 and 17: any licensed driver 21 or older, but from midnight to 6 a.m. only a licensed parent, guardian or custodian. (Ohio Driver Manual, Section 1)
Can I use my phone while driving on a TIPIC?
No. Using any mobile electronic device while driving is not allowed for permit holders of any age. (Ohio Driver Manual, Section 1)
Getting your license
What do I need before the driving test if I am under 21?
Driver education (24 hours of class and 8 hours of driving) and 50 logged hours of practice with an eligible licensed driver, 10 at night; under 18, also six months with the TIPIC. (Ohio Driver Manual, Section 1)
When does a license issued under 21 expire?
On your 21st birthday. You can renew up to 30 days before it. (Ohio Driver Manual, Section 12)
