About the Illinois permit test

The basics, in plain English, from the Illinois Rules of the Road.

  1. What's on the test

The written exam checks road signs by shape, color or symbol, signals and pavement markings, plus multiple-choice and true-or-false questions on traffic laws and safety. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 14)

  2. Three tries

You get three attempts to pass each exam within one year of paying your application fee. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 13)

  3. Getting a permit

From 15, with proof you're enrolled in an approved driver education course; at 17 and 3 months or older, without driver education. You pass the vision and written exams. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 16)

  4. Nine months and 50 hours

Under 18, hold the permit at least nine months and log 50 supervised hours, 10 of them at night, before a license at 16. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 16)

  5. No phones under 19

Drivers under 19 may not use a phone at all while driving, not even hands-free, except to call for help in an emergency. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 18)

  6. Night limits for teens

Permit and new young drivers may not drive Sunday to Thursday 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., or Friday and Saturday 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 18)
