About the Georgia permit test

The basics, in plain English, from the Georgia Drivers' Manual.

  1. Two tests in one exam

The knowledge exam has a road signs part and a road rules part, 20 questions each. You need 15 right in each part. (Georgia Drivers' Manual, p. 12)

  2. Permit at 15

From age 15 you can get a Class C instructional permit by passing the vision test and the knowledge exam. It lasts two years. (Georgia Drivers' Manual, p. 8)

  3. Driving with your permit

You may drive only with a licensed driver who is at least 21, fit to drive and sitting next to you. (Georgia Drivers' Manual, p. 8)

  4. Class D at 16

After a year and a day with the permit, teens need driver education, ADAP and 40 hours of practice (6 at night) for a Class D provisional license. (Georgia Drivers' Manual, p. 27)

  5. Hands-free law

You may not hold or support a phone while driving; texting, reading or watching video is banned. (Georgia Drivers' Manual, p. 25)

  6. Points add up

Georgia suspends a license at 15 or more points in 24 months, and much sooner for drivers under 18 or 21. (Georgia Drivers' Manual, p. 48)
