How many questions are on the Illinois permit test?

The Illinois knowledge test has 35 questions, and you need 28 right (80%) to pass. Our full practice exam uses the same size and pass mark. Always confirm the current test with the Illinois Secretary of State, Driver Services.

What's on the Illinois written exam?

Road signs by shape, color or symbol, traffic signals and pavement markings, and multiple-choice and true-or-false questions on traffic laws, safety rules, crash prevention and equipment. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 14)

How many tries do I get?

Three attempts at each exam within one year of paying your application fee. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 13)

What happens if I'm caught cheating?

You fail the exam and can't retake it for 30 days. Taking the exam for someone else is a crime with a minimum of seven days in jail. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 13)

How old do I need to be for an Illinois permit?

15, if you're enrolled (or will start within 30 days) in an approved driver education course. From 17 and 3 months, you can apply without driver education. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 16)

Who can supervise me on a permit?

A driver education instructor during lessons, or a parent, legal guardian or responsible adult 21 or older with a valid license and at least a year of driving experience, sitting in the front passenger seat. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 16)

Getting your license

What do I need before a license at 16?

An approved driver education course, nine months with the permit, and 50 logged hours of supervised driving including 10 at night, with no violations during the permit phase. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 16)

I'm 19 and have never had a license. Do I need driver education?

Yes. First-time applicants aged 18 to 20 who haven't taken driver education must complete a six-hour Adult Driver Education Course from a certified provider. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 18)

When does a license issued under 21 expire?

Three months after your 21st birthday. (Illinois Rules of the Road, p. 8)
