The knowledge test
How many questions are on the New York permit test?
20 questions. You must get at least 14 right, and at least 2 of the 4 road sign questions must be correct. (New York State Driver's Manual, p. 10)
What does the written test cover?
Rules of the road, safe driving techniques, road signs and the laws about alcohol and drug use while driving. (New York State Driver's Manual, p. 10)
Getting your permit
How old do I need to be for a learner permit?
16, for a junior learner permit (Class DJ). (New York State Driver's Manual, p. 6)
Who can supervise me with a learner permit?
A licensed driver at least 21 years old, with a license valid for your vehicle, sitting in the front seat. On Long Island and in New York City it must be a parent, guardian or driving instructor. (New York State Driver's Manual, p. 13)
Teen drivers
How much practice do I need before the road test?
At least 50 hours, including at least 15 after sunset, certified by a parent or guardian on form MV-262. You also hold the permit for at least six months. (New York State Driver's Manual, p. 14)
Can I drive with friends on a junior permit or license?
Not more than one passenger under 21 who isn't an immediate family member (with a permit, unless your supervisor is a parent, guardian or instructor). (New York State Driver's Manual, p. 13)
What is the pre-licensing course?
A 5-hour safe driving course you must finish before booking a road test; high school or college driver education counts. (New York State Driver's Manual, p. 13)
Moving to New York
How long do I have to switch to a New York license?
30 days after becoming a permanent resident; you turn in your out-of-state license. (New York State Driver's Manual, p. 6)
