The knowledge test
How many questions are on the California permit test?
The California knowledge test depends on your age: under 18, 46 questions with 38 to pass; adults 18 or older, 36 questions with 30 to pass. Our full practice exam uses the same size and pass mark. Always confirm the current test with the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
What's on the California knowledge test?
Multiple-choice questions on the information in the California Driver's Handbook. You can't use the handbook, a phone or any other testing aid during the test. (California Driver's Handbook, p. 5)
How many tries do I get?
Three attempts before you have to apply again. If you're under 18 and fail, you wait seven days before trying again, not counting the day you failed. (California Driver's Handbook, p. 5)
Is there a vision test?
Yes, everyone takes one. If you pass it wearing glasses or contacts, your license will show a corrective lenses restriction. (California Driver's Handbook, p. 5)
Getting your permit
How old do I need to be for an instruction permit?
If you're under 18, at least 15½. You also need to have completed a driver education program, and a parent or guardian has to sign your application. (California Driver's Handbook, p. 3)
What do I need to bring?
Proof of identity, two proofs of California residency, your social security number (exceptions may apply), and a document showing your current legal name if it differs from your identity document. (California Driver's Handbook, p. 2)
When can I start driving with my permit?
If you're under 18, only once you start behind-the-wheel training with an instructor, who validates your permit. (California Driver's Handbook, p. 3)
After the permit
Who can supervise my practice driving?
A California-licensed driver who sits close enough to take control of the vehicle. They must be at least 18, or at least 25 if you're under 18. (California Driver's Handbook, p. 3)
When can I take the behind-the-wheel drive test?
If you're under 18: once you're at least 16, have held your permit for at least 6 months (or turned 18), have finished driver education and driver training, and have practiced at least 50 hours, including 10 at night. (California Driver's Handbook, p. 3)
Are there limits on new drivers under 18?
Yes. For the first 12 months you can't drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., and you can't carry passengers under 20 unless a parent, guardian or licensed driver aged 25 or older rides with you. There are exceptions with a signed note, for example for medical needs, school or work. (California Driver's Handbook, p. 4)
What if I fail the drive test?
If you're under 18, you wait 14 days before trying again, not counting the day you failed. (California Driver's Handbook, p. 6)
