The knowledge test
How many questions are on the Texas permit test?
The Texas knowledge test has 30 questions, and you need 21 right (70%) to pass. Our full practice exam uses the same size and pass mark. Always confirm the current test with the Texas Department of Public Safety, Driver License Division.
What score do I need to pass the Texas knowledge exam?
70 percent or better, for any knowledge exam. (Texas Driver Handbook, p. 7)
What happens if I fail?
Your application is held for 90 days. After 90 days or three failed exams, you need a new application and fee. (Texas Driver Handbook, p. 7)
Do I always take the knowledge exam at a driver license office?
Not always. Applicants under 25 must take driver education, and after some approved courses you don't need to take the Class C knowledge exam at the office. (Texas Driver Handbook, p. 7)
Getting your permit
How old do I need to be for a learner license?
At least 15 and under 18, with the classroom part of driver education, a vision exam and the knowledge exam done. (Texas Driver Handbook, p. 1)
Who can supervise me while I drive with a learner license?
A licensed driver who is at least 21, has at least one year of driving experience, and sits beside you. They can't be intoxicated, asleep or busy with anything that stops them watching your driving. (Texas Driver Handbook, p. 1)
Teen drivers
What limits apply with a provisional license?
Until 18: no more than one passenger under 21 who isn't a family member, and no driving between midnight and 5 a.m. unless it's for work, a school activity or a medical emergency. (Texas Driver Handbook, p. 3)
Can drivers under 18 use a phone while driving?
No. Drivers under 18 may not use a wireless device, even hands-free, except in an emergency. (Texas Driver Handbook, p. 3)
How long must I hold a learner license?
At least six months before a provisional license. A suspension during that time adds its days to the six months. (Texas Driver Handbook, p. 2)
