About the Wisconsin permit test

The basics, in plain English, from the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook.

  1. Two tests to pass

A highway signs test of 15 questions (12 right to pass) and a knowledge test of 50 questions (40 right to pass), plus a vision screening. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 1)

  2. Permit from 15

Under 18, you can get an instruction permit at 15 once you're enrolled in driver education, including behind-the-wheel training, and an adult sponsor has signed. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 5)

  3. 50 hours of practice

Teens hold the permit at least six months and log 50 supervised hours, 10 of them after dark, before the road test. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 6)

  4. Four-second gap

Wisconsin teaches a four-second following distance, plus a second for each bad condition such as rain, snow or heavy traffic. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 10)

  5. No alcohol under 21

Drivers under 21 must have an alcohol concentration of 0.00%. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 49)

  6. Stop 20 feet from a school bus

When a school bus has its red lights flashing, stop at least 20 feet away, in either direction, unless a barrier divides the highway. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 51)

Wisconsin permit test FAQ

How many questions are on the Wisconsin permit test?

How old do I have to be for a Wisconsin instruction permit?

At least 15, enrolled in driver education with behind-the-wheel training, and with an adult sponsor if you are under 18. From 18 you need only to pass the tests and the vision screening. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 5)

Who can ride with me while I drive on a permit?

A licensed driver with at least two years of experience and a regular license sits beside you: an instructor or parent, guardian or spouse aged 19+, or anyone 21+ (with a parent's written OK if you're under 18). After dark it must be an instructor or a licensed person aged 25+. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 5)

Our questions are written from the guide (2026 (BDS126)). Always study the official handbook from the state. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages; tap one to open the official PDF at that page. A PDF viewer counts the cover too, so its page numbers run 4 higher.
