What's on the test

The questions come from the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook. They cover these areas; each links to free practice questions on it:

A study plan in five steps

  1. Read the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook

Everything on the test is in it. Read it chapter by chapter, slowly, and come back to the parts you find hard:

    • Driving Test Requirements
    • Progression of Licenses
    • The Basics: Right-of-Way, Speed, Intersections and Space
    • The Basics: Turning, Passing, Backing, Parking and Communication
    • Signs
    • Signals, Pavement Markings and Lane Controls
    • Driving Situations
    • Driving Conditions
    • Handling Emergencies
    • Dangerous Driving Behaviors
    • Sharing the Road
    • Your Driving Privilege
    • Other Important Information

    Open the official handbook (PDF)

  2. Practice one topic at a time

After each chapter, practice that topic. You see the right answer and why straight away, with the handbook page to reread.

  3. Learn the road signs

Signs are quick points once you know them by shape and color. Study the signs one at a time, then test yourself on 20.

  4. Fix your weak spots

Your practice results are saved on your device. Practice my weak spots builds a round from the topics you miss most.

  5. Take the full practice exam

The full exam works like the real one: 65 questions, 52 to pass, no answers until the end. Keep going until you pass comfortably several times in a row, then review every question you missed.

Before test day

Two tests to pass

A highway signs test of 15 questions (12 right to pass) and a knowledge test of 50 questions (40 right to pass), plus a vision screening. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 1)

Permit from 15

Under 18, you can get an instruction permit at 15 once you're enrolled in driver education, including behind-the-wheel training, and an adult sponsor has signed. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 5)

50 hours of practice

Teens hold the permit at least six months and log 50 supervised hours, 10 of them after dark, before the road test. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 6)

Four-second gap

Wisconsin teaches a four-second following distance, plus a second for each bad condition such as rain, snow or heavy traffic. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 10)

No alcohol under 21

Drivers under 21 must have an alcohol concentration of 0.00%. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 49)

Stop 20 feet from a school bus

When a school bus has its red lights flashing, stop at least 20 feet away, in either direction, unless a barrier divides the highway. (Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p. 51)
