The knowledge test

How many questions are on the Arizona permit test?

The Arizona knowledge test has 30 questions, and you need 24 right (80%) to pass. The Arizona Driver License Manual also describes a separate road sign test. Our full practice exam uses the same size and pass mark. Always confirm the current test with the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (ADOT MVD).

The permit

How old do I have to be for an Arizona instruction permit?

At least 15 years and 6 months for a graduated (or motorcycle) permit. An operator permit, for drivers 18 and older, needs you to be 18. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 12)

Who can ride with me while I drive on a permit?

A driver aged 21 or older with a Class A, B, C or D license, sitting in the seat beside you. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 12)

Does a parent have to sign my application?

Yes, if you're under 18. An adult such as a parent or legal guardian signs, in front of an MVD agent or a notary, and takes on responsibility for your driving. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 13–14)

The graduated license

What do I need for a graduated license?

Be 16 to 17, hold an Arizona permit for at least 6 months, and either finish MVD-approved driver education or have a parent certify 30 hours of supervised practice, including 10 at night. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 12–13)

What are the limits during the first six months?

No driving between midnight and 5 a.m. and no more than one passenger under 18, unless an exception applies (for example a parent in the front seat, or the passengers are your siblings). (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 12)

Rules of the road

How far do I keep from a bicycle when passing?

At least 3 feet. Don't honk as you pass, because the noise can startle the rider. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 50)

What should I do in a dust storm?

Slow down and get fully off the road as soon as you can. Turn off your lights, take your foot off the brake, and wait with your seat belt on until it passes. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 55)

Penalties

How many points lead to Traffic Survival School?

Collecting 8 or more points in 12 months means you must attend Traffic Survival School, or your driving privilege may be suspended. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 62)
