A study plan in five steps
Read the Arizona Driver License Manual
Everything on the test is in it. Read it chapter by chapter, slowly, and come back to the parts you find hard:
- Your license and permit
- Before You Drive
- Safe Driving Practices
- Signals, Right-of-Way and Speed
- Signs, Markings, Turns and Light Rail
- Sharing the Road with Other Vehicles
- Stopping, Weather and Night Driving
- Alcohol, Drugs and Driver Improvement
- Handling Emergencies
- Law Enforcement Stops
Practice one topic at a time
After each chapter, practice that topic. You see the right answer and why straight away, with the handbook page to reread.
Learn the road signs
Signs are quick points once you know them by shape and color. Study the signs one at a time, then test yourself on 20. Arizona also gives a separate road sign test, so they matter twice.
Fix your weak spots
Your practice results are saved on your device. Practice my weak spots builds a round from the topics you miss most.
Take the full practice exam
The full exam works like the real one: 30 questions, 24 to pass, no answers until the end. Keep going until you pass comfortably several times in a row, then review every question you missed.
Before test day
Permit from 15½
You can get a graduated instruction permit at 15 years and 6 months after passing the written test. It's valid for 12 months. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 12–13)
A licensed adult beside you
With a permit, the person in the seat next to you must be at least 21 and hold a Class A, B, C or D license. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 12)
Six months before the graduated license
Under 18, hold your permit at least 6 months and finish approved driver education, or have a parent certify 30 hours of practice, 10 of them at night. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 13)
The first six months
A new graduated driver can't drive from midnight to 5 a.m. or carry more than one passenger under 18, apart from listed exceptions such as siblings. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 12)
Phones stay out of your hand
Arizona doesn't allow holding or supporting a phone while driving. Hands-free and voice-to-text use is allowed. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 24)
Zero tolerance under 21
Under 21, any trace of alcohol or impairing drugs can cost you your license, and the manual warns of a two-year suspension. (Arizona Driver License Manual, p. 60)
