The knowledge test

What if I fail the Utah written knowledge test?

Book a written retest appointment. One fee covers up to three tries within 12 months; after a third failed try you pay again for three more. (Utah Driver Handbook, p. 23)

What is Utah's Traffic Safety and Trends Exam?

A second, online-only test every first-time Class D applicant must pass with a perfect score before the license. You need your permit number to register; it has four short videos and 40 questions, and you may retake it as often as you need. (Utah Driver License Division: Traffic Safety and Trends Exam)

How long must I hold a Utah learner permit?

Six months at 16 or 17. At 18 there is no holding period but driver education is required; from 19 it is 90 days unless you complete a driver education course. (Utah Driver Handbook, p. 7)

How many practice hours does a Utah learner need?

40 hours of driving with a parent or legal guardian, including 10 hours after sunset, on top of the driver education course. (Utah Driver Handbook, p. 6)

Your first license

What limits apply to newly licensed Utah teens?

Licensed drivers of 16 and 17 may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless a licensed driver of 21 or older rides along or they are going to or from work, a school activity, farm work or an emergency. For the first six months, or until 18, they may carry only immediate family unless a licensed adult of 21 or older sits in the passenger seat. (Utah Driver License Division: Teen Driver Restrictions)

Rules to know

What is the legal alcohol limit for Utah drivers?

0.05 BAC for drivers 21 and older (0.04 in a commercial vehicle). Under 21, any measurable alcohol means six months without driving privileges for a first offense under the Not-a-Drop Act. (Utah Driver Handbook, p. 52)

Can Utah teens use a phone while driving?

Drivers under 18 may use a handheld wireless device only for a medical emergency, to report a safety hazard or a crime, or to talk with a parent or legal guardian. Drivers 18 and older may talk only by voice command, never text. (Utah Driver Handbook, p. 58–59)
