The basics, in plain English, from the Utah Driver Handbook.
Utah issues a learner permit from age 15 after an eye test and the written knowledge test. The permit and your test score are good for 18 months. (Utah Driver Handbook, p. 7)
First-time applicants take a closed-book written test of 50 questions and need a score of 80% or better. It isn't timed and usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. (Utah Driver License Division: Written Knowledge Test)
Teens of 16 or 17 hold the permit at least six months and finish driver education. At 18 there is no holding period; from 19 it is 90 days unless you take driver education. (Utah Driver Handbook, p. 7)
Learners log 40 hours of driving with a parent or legal guardian, 10 of them after sunset, before the license. (Utah Driver Handbook, p. 6)
Utah's legal limit is 0.05 BAC (0.04 for commercial drivers), and drivers under 21 may have no measurable alcohol at all. (Utah Driver Handbook, p. 52)
Licensed 16- and 17-year-olds may not drive from midnight to 5 a.m. without a licensed driver of 21 or older, and carry no friends for the first six months or until 18, with set exceptions. (Utah Driver License Division: Teen Driver Restrictions)
If you have never been licensed, the written knowledge test is closed-book with 50 questions, and you need 80% (40 right) to pass. Drivers who were licensed before take a 25-question open-book test instead. (Utah Driver License Division: Written Knowledge Test)
A second, online-only test every first-time Class D applicant must pass with a perfect score before the license. You need your permit number to register; it has four short videos and 40 questions, and you may retake it as often as you need. (Utah Driver License Division: Traffic Safety and Trends Exam)
15. The entry-level permit lasts 18 months, and while you drive the seat beside you must hold a licensed parent, stepparent, foster parent, guardian, approved instructor or responsible adult of 21 or older. (Utah Driver Handbook, p. 7)
Licensed drivers of 16 and 17 may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless a licensed driver of 21 or older rides along or they are going to or from work, a school activity, farm work or an emergency. For the first six months, or until 18, they may carry only immediate family unless a licensed adult of 21 or older sits in the passenger seat. (Utah Driver License Division: Teen Driver Restrictions)
Our questions are written from the guide (2026-2027). Always study the official handbook from the state. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages; tap one to open the official PDF at that page. A PDF viewer counts the cover too, so its page numbers run 10 higher.
