Missouri Permit Test FAQ
Plain-English answers about the Missouri permit test, from the Missouri Driver Guide. Always check the official guide for the current rules.
The written test
How many questions are on the Missouri permit test?
25 multiple-choice questions about traffic rules and safe driving. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 18)
What score do I need to pass?
At least 20 correct answers out of 25, which is 80%. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 2)
What's on the test?
Everything comes from the Missouri Driver Guide, and there are no trick questions. You can't use the guide during the test. For a regular car license, there are no questions about commercial vehicles. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 18)
Is there a separate road sign test?
Yes. Along with the written test, there's a road sign test that checks you can recognize signs and know what they mean, plus an eye check. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 18–19)
How should I prepare?
Read the guide before you take the written test. The guide says almost half of people fail on their first try, and that reviewing it gives you a much better chance of passing. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 17)
Getting your permit
How old do I need to be for a learner's permit?
You can get a learner's permit at 15. It's the first step toward a full license and lets you practice with an experienced adult supervising. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 3)
What should I bring to the test?
Documents that show who you are and how old you are. You need them each time you take the written or driving test. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them for the eye check. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 18–19)
Where do I take the test?
The state gives the driver exam at its testing centers. Check the official state website to find the nearest one. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 18)
Does a parent need to come with me?
Yes. A parent or legal guardian (or another adult the guide lists) has to come with you to the license office to sign permission for your permit. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 15)
Is my test result the same as a permit?
No. The record you get after passing the tests isn't a permit. Take it, along with your documents, to a license office to get the actual permit. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 3)
After the permit
Who can sit beside me while I drive with a permit?
Under 16, only certain adults, such as a parent, grandparent, legal guardian or driving instructor, can supervise you from the front seat. From 16, any licensed driver aged 21 or older can. Everyone in the car must wear a seat belt. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 15)
How long do I keep the permit before the next step?
At least six months (182 days), with 40 hours of supervised driving that include at least 10 hours at night. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 16)
Do I need a driving test?
Yes. After you pass the written, eye and road sign tests, you take a driving test with an examiner before you move up from the permit. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 16)
Are there limits on newer drivers after the permit?
Yes. For the first six months you may carry only one passenger under 19 who isn't family, and after that up to three. You also can't drive alone between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., except to or from school activities, work or an emergency, unless a licensed driver aged 21 or older is with you. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 16)
