What's on the test

The questions come from the Missouri Driver Guide. They cover these areas; each links to free practice questions on it:

A study plan in five steps

  1. Read the Missouri Driver Guide

Everything on the test is in it. Read it chapter by chapter, slowly, and come back to the parts you find hard:

    • The Missouri Driver License
    • The Driver Examination
    • Rules of the Road
    • Sharing the Road
    • Parking
    • Highway Driving
    • Pavement Markings, Traffic Signs, and Signals
    • Safe Driving Tips for Everyday Driving
    • Safe Driving Tips for Special Driving Conditions
    • Alcohol, Drugs, and Driving
    • The Point System
    • Vehicle Titling and Registration
    • Mandatory Insurance
    • Safety and Emissions Inspections & Required Equipment
    • Distracted Driving and Electronic Communication Devices

    Open the official handbook (PDF)

  2. Practice one topic at a time

After each chapter, practice that topic. You see the right answer and why straight away, with the handbook page to reread.

  3. Learn the road signs

Signs are quick points once you know them by shape and color. Study the signs one at a time, then test yourself on 20. Missouri also gives a separate road sign test, so they matter twice.

  4. Fix your weak spots

Your practice results are saved on your device. Practice my weak spots builds a round from the topics you miss most.

  5. Take the full practice exam

The full exam works like the real one: 25 questions, 20 to pass, no answers until the end. Keep going until you pass comfortably several times in a row, then review every question you missed.

Before test day

What's on the test

Multiple-choice questions about traffic rules, road signs and safe driving, all taken from the Missouri Driver Guide. There are 25 questions, and you need 20 right to pass. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 2)

Four parts to the exam

The full driver exam has a written test, an eye check, a road sign test and, later, a driving test. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 18)

When you can start

At 15 you can get a learner's permit and practice with an experienced adult beside you. After that you move up to an intermediate license, and later to a full license. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 15)

Practice before the next step

You'll need plenty of supervised driving, including some at night, before you move up from the learner's permit. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 16)

What to bring

Proof of who you are and how old you are. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them for the eye check. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 18)

How to prepare

Read the guide, practice one topic at a time, learn the road signs, then take the full practice exam until you pass it comfortably. (Missouri Driver Guide, p. 17)
