How many questions are on the Massachusetts permit test?

25 multiple-choice questions. You need 18 correct, and you have 25 minutes. Topics include alcohol, suspensions, junior operator rules, rules of the road and road signs. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 16)

How old do I have to be for a learner's permit?

At least 16 for a Class D or Class M learner's permit. The permit is valid for up to two years. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 15)

What happens if I'm caught cheating on the exam?

You fail, and if found responsible you can't hold any license or permit for 60 days. Manuals, notes and electronic devices aren't allowed in the testing area. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 16)

Driving on a permit

Who has to ride with me while I drive on a permit?

A licensed driver who is at least 21, has at least one year of driving experience and sits in the passenger seat next to you. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 18)

Can I drive at night with a learner's permit?

If you're under 18, not between midnight and 5 a.m. unless a licensed parent or guardian with at least a year of experience is with you. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 18)

Junior operator license

What do I need before my road test if I'm under 18?

Six months on your permit with a clean record, an RMV-approved driver education course, 40 hours of supervised driving (30 with a skills program) and two hours of parent instruction. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 9–10)

What happens if I break the junior operator passenger or night rules?

A license suspension of 60 days for a first offense, 180 days for a second and a year after that, plus a retraining course for repeat offenses. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 11)

Rules of the road

When do I have to turn on my headlights?

From a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise, whenever you can't see 500 feet ahead, and whenever your windshield wipers are on. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 45)
