About the Massachusetts permit test

The basics, in plain English, from the Massachusetts Driver's Manual.

  1. Permit at 16

You can apply for a Class D learner's permit at 16. The permit exam has 25 multiple-choice questions, and you need 18 right within 25 minutes. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 15–16)

  2. A licensed adult beside you

On a permit, drive only with a licensed driver who is 21 or older, has at least a year of driving experience and sits in the seat next to you. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 18)

  3. Junior operator license at 16½

Under 18, you need six months on your permit with a clean record, driver education and 40 hours of supervised driving before the road test. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 9–10)

  4. Junior operator limits

For the first six months, no passengers under 18 except family unless a qualified adult rides beside you, and no driving from 12:30 to 5 a.m. without a parent. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 10–11)

  5. No phones under 18

Drivers under 18 may not use any mobile electronic device while driving, except to report an emergency. Adults must stay hands-free. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 39–40)

  6. Four feet for vulnerable road users

When passing pedestrians, bicyclists, roadside workers or riders on horseback, leave at least four feet and keep to the speed limit. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 49)

Our questions are written from the guide (revised April 2026). Always study the official handbook from the state. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages; tap one to open the official PDF at that page. A PDF viewer counts the cover too, so its page numbers run 8 higher.
