What's on the test

The questions come from the Massachusetts Driver's Manual. They cover these areas; each links to free practice questions on it:

A study plan in five steps

  1. Read the Massachusetts Driver's Manual

Everything on the test is in it. Read it chapter by chapter, slowly, and come back to the parts you find hard:

    • Obtaining Your License
    • Safety First: Your Vehicle and Distractions
    • Safety First: Driving Defensively
    • Keeping Your License: Violations and Suspensions
    • Keeping Your License: Alcohol, Drugs and Driving
    • Rules of the Road: Speed, Signals, Signs and Markings
    • Rules of the Road: Lanes, Turns and Right-of-Way
    • Rules of the Road: Sharing the Road and Parking
    • Special Driving Situations

    Open the official handbook (PDF)

  2. Practice one topic at a time

After each chapter, practice that topic. You see the right answer and why straight away, with the handbook page to reread.

  3. Learn the road signs

Signs are quick points once you know them by shape and color. Study the signs one at a time, then test yourself on 20.

  4. Fix your weak spots

Your practice results are saved on your device. Practice my weak spots builds a round from the topics you miss most.

  5. Take the full practice exam

The full exam works like the real one: 25 questions, 18 to pass, no answers until the end. Keep going until you pass comfortably several times in a row, then review every question you missed.

Before test day

Permit at 16

You can apply for a Class D learner's permit at 16. The permit exam has 25 multiple-choice questions, and you need 18 right within 25 minutes. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 15–16)

A licensed adult beside you

On a permit, drive only with a licensed driver who is 21 or older, has at least a year of driving experience and sits in the seat next to you. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 18)

Junior operator license at 16½

Under 18, you need six months on your permit with a clean record, driver education and 40 hours of supervised driving before the road test. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 9–10)

Junior operator limits

For the first six months, no passengers under 18 except family unless a qualified adult rides beside you, and no driving from 12:30 to 5 a.m. without a parent. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 10–11)

No phones under 18

Drivers under 18 may not use any mobile electronic device while driving, except to report an emergency. Adults must stay hands-free. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 39–40)

Four feet for vulnerable road users

When passing pedestrians, bicyclists, roadside workers or riders on horseback, leave at least four feet and keep to the speed limit. (Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p. 49)
