Everything in the Colorado Driver Handbook: road signs, impaired driving, the rules of the road, safety rules and legal topics. (Colorado Driver Handbook, p. 1)

Can I take the written test just before the office closes?

No. Offices stop giving written tests 30 minutes before their scheduled closing time, so arrive early. (Colorado Driver Handbook, p. 1)

Can I take the Colorado written test online or in Spanish?

Yes. The @Home Driving Knowledge Test runs on a computer with a webcam, any time: you get 60 minutes, may try up to twice a day, and test-takers under 19 need an adult over 19 as a proxy. It can be read aloud in English or Spanish. You can also test at an office, in English or Spanish, or at a driving school. After passing online, book an office appointment to get your permit. Your instruction permit

How old do I have to be to get a Colorado instruction permit?

At least 15. From 15 to 15 and a half you first complete a 30-hour driver education course; from 15 and a half to 16, either that course or a 4-hour driver awareness program. (Colorado DMV: Permits and First-Time Driver License)

Who has to ride with me on a Colorado instruction permit?

Someone aged 21 or older with a valid Colorado driver license, sitting in the front passenger seat. (Colorado Driver Handbook, p. 1)

What is the Affidavit of Liability?

Applicants under 18 need an adult aged 21 or older with a valid Colorado driver license (a parent, guardian or other responsible adult) to sign form DR 2460, in front of DMV staff or a notary, taking legal responsibility for their driving. If the signer later withdraws, a new adult must sign and a new permit is issued. (Colorado DMV: Permits and First-Time Driver License)

How long is a Colorado instruction permit valid?

Three years, or until your 21st birthday if that comes first. (Colorado DMV: Permits and First-Time Driver License)

I'm 18 to 20. How long must I hold my Colorado permit?

There's no minimum: from 18 you can take the drive test as soon as you have your permit, as long as a licensed driver aged 21 or older rides in the front passenger seat whenever you practice. (Colorado DMV: Permits and First-Time Driver License)

Your first license

How long do teens need a permit before a Colorado driver license?

Twelve months, or until you turn 18 if that comes first, plus a signed log of 50 hours behind the wheel with 10 at night. Under 16 and a half, you also need 6 hours with an approved driving school. (Colorado DMV: Permits and First-Time Driver License)

What limits apply to new drivers under 18?

For the first six months only passengers 21 or older may ride with you, then one passenger under 21 until the first year is up (siblings may always ride). During the first year you may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m., with exceptions such as school, work or a medical emergency. The limits end after one year or at 18. (Colorado DMV: Permits and First-Time Driver License)

Where do I take the Colorado drive test?

Mostly with a certified commercial driving school; some county-run offices also offer it. If you fail, you can retake it on the next business day. (Colorado Driver Handbook, p. 1–2)

Can drivers under 18 use a phone while driving in Colorado?

No. Drivers under 18 may not text or talk on a phone while driving, even hands-free; the only exception is an emergency call to the police. (Colorado DMV: Permits and First-Time Driver License)
