Bring your identity documents
Check the DMV's list of accepted documents for U.S. citizens and permanent residents before you go. (Colorado Driver Handbook, p. 1)
Take driver education (ages 15 to 16)
From 15 to 15 and a half, complete a 30-hour driver education course; from 15 and a half to 16, either that course or a 4-hour driver awareness program. (Colorado DMV: Permits and First-Time Driver License)
Get the Affidavit of Liability signed (under 18)
A parent, guardian or other responsible adult aged 21 or older with a valid Colorado license signs form DR 2460 in front of DMV staff or a notary and accepts legal responsibility for your driving. (Colorado DMV: Permits and First-Time Driver License)
Pass the written knowledge test
It covers road signs, impaired driving, driving and safety rules and legal topics. Offices stop giving it 30 minutes before closing. (Colorado Driver Handbook, p. 1)
Or test online or in Spanish
You can take the @Home Driving Knowledge Test online and bring its Certificate of Completion (paper or on your phone) to your appointment, or test at an office in English or Spanish. (Colorado DMV: Permits and First-Time Driver License)
Fees and the full list of accepted documents change from time to time, so check them on the Colorado Department of Revenue, Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website before you go.
Rules while you have a instruction permit
- A licensed Colorado driver aged 21 or older sits in the front passenger seat. (Colorado Driver Handbook, p. 1)
- Everyone riding with a driver under 18 wears a seat belt, and there are never more passengers than belts. (Colorado Driver Handbook, p. 3)
- Under 18, no texting or talking on a phone while driving, even hands-free, except an emergency call to the police. (Colorado DMV: Permits and First-Time Driver License)
What comes next
After 12 months with the permit (or at 18, if sooner), with a signed log of 50 hours (10 at night) and at 16 or older, pass the drive test at an approved third-party driving school, then upgrade online or in person. Passenger limits and a midnight to 5 a.m. curfew apply in your first year. (Colorado DMV: Permits and First-Time Driver License)
This guide is a free learning aid based on the Colorado Driver Handbook (DR 2337 (12/05/24)), not official advice. Rules, documents and fees can change: always confirm with the Colorado Department of Revenue, Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) before you go. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages; tap one to open the official PDF at that page. A PDF viewer counts the cover too, so its page numbers run 3 higher.
