Vermont Permit Test FAQ
Plain-English answers about the Vermont permit test, from the Vermont Driver's Manual. Always check the official guide for the current rules.
The Vermont permit test
How many questions are on the Vermont permit test?
20 multiple-choice questions, each with four choices. You need at least 16 right to pass, and the test is taken online. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 18)
What if I fail the Vermont knowledge test?
Wait at least one day, then try again. The test fee is charged for each attempt, and there is no limit on how many times you can take it. (Vermont DMV: Learner's Permit)
Where do I take the Vermont learner's permit test?
Online, through mydmv.vermont.gov; it is no longer given at DMV offices. Passing it does not issue the permit by itself: you still apply and pay the permit fee. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 18)
Your Vermont learner's permit
How old do you have to be for a Vermont learner's permit?
At least 15. Applicants aged 15 to 17 need a parent or legal guardian to sign the application unless they are emancipated, and need a clean driving record for the past two years. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 12)
Who can supervise a Vermont permit driver?
Someone licensed and unimpaired in the front seat: your parent or guardian, a licensed or certified driver education instructor, or any licensed person aged 25 or older. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 13)
Can I drive right after passing the Vermont permit test?
Once you have taken the test and paid, your receipt works as a temporary learner's permit for 90 days. Carry it whenever you drive. (Vermont DMV: Learner's Permit)
I'm 18 or older with a Vermont permit. Do I still need a supervisor?
Yes. The permit holder's age does not change the rule: a licensed, unimpaired supervisor who is 25 or older (or a parent, guardian or instructor) must ride with you. (Vermont DMV: Learner's Permit)
Your Vermont junior license
When can I get a Vermont junior driver's license?
At 16 or 17, after a year on your learner's permit with no recall, suspension or revocation in the last six months, a passed driver education course, 40 extra practice hours (10 at night) and the road test. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 20)
Can a Vermont junior driver drive for a job?
Not in the first year, or until 18 if that comes sooner; delivery driving for pay is the manual's example. Carrying passengers for hire is never allowed on a junior license. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 20)
What happens if a Vermont junior driver breaks the GDL rules?
The permit or junior license is recalled: 90 days for carrying passengers for hire, driving for work, a 3-point speeding ticket or 6 points in total, and 30 days on a diversion board's recommendation. The DMV also lists 90-day recalls for passenger violations. (Vermont DMV: Graduated License Laws)
I have a junior license from another state. What do I need in Vermont?
It now transfers like a regular license: no retest and no 40-hour certification, but you still show proof of driver education. Vermont's GDL limits apply unless you held the other license for at least six months. (Vermont DMV: Junior Driver's License)
Driving in Vermont
What is Vermont's speed limit when no sign is posted?
50 mph on Vermont roads unless a sign says otherwise, and 65 mph on the Interstate unless posted, always slower when conditions call for it. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 28)
Can I use my phone while driving in Vermont?
Not a handheld one. Using a portable electronic device while driving on a public highway is illegal, even when stopped in traffic; fines rise for a second offense. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 55)
How many points lead to a suspension in Vermont?
10. Points from convictions within two years decide how long the suspension lasts, and you may ask for a hearing. Parking and equipment tickets carry no points. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 64)
