About the Vermont permit test

The basics, in plain English, from the Vermont Driver's Manual.

  1. Learner's permit at 15

You can take the online permit test from age 15. Until you turn 18, a parent or legal guardian has to sign your application first. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 12)

  2. Who rides beside you

On a learner's permit, the front seat goes to a licensed, sober parent or guardian, a driver education instructor, or a licensed adult aged 25 or older. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 13)

  3. A year on the permit

Before a junior license you hold the permit for at least a year, finish driver education and log 40 more practice hours, at least 10 of them after dark. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 20)

  4. Junior license passengers

For the first three months a junior driver carries passengers only with a qualified adult in front; family members come next, and after six months the limit is one rider per seat belt. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 20–21)

  5. Four-second following

Vermont teaches a four-second gap behind the car ahead, and more than that in bad weather, at higher speeds or behind a motorcycle. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 27)

  6. Ten points means suspension

Each conviction adds points to your record, and reaching 10 points brings a notice that your driving privilege will be suspended. (Vermont Driver's Manual, p. 64)
