At 14 or 15, for 12 months or until you turn 16, whichever comes first, but never less than six months. At 16 or 17, for six months or until you turn 18. (North Dakota Noncommercial Driver License Manual, p. 3)
Who can supervise me on a North Dakota instruction permit?
A licensed driver for that class of vehicle who is at least 18 and has three years of driving experience, sitting in the seat beside you. Nobody else may sit in the front unless the vehicle has only a front seat. (North Dakota Noncommercial Driver License Manual, p. 3)
What are the rules on a North Dakota restricted license at 15?
You may drive only a parent's, guardian's, grandparent's, sibling's, aunt's or uncle's vehicle, and not between sunset or 9 p.m. (whichever is later) and 5 a.m. unless a parent, guardian or someone 18 or older is with you, or you are going straight to or from work, school or a religious activity. It becomes unrestricted at 16. (North Dakota Noncommercial Driver License Manual, p. 6)
Can I use my phone on a North Dakota permit?

Can I skip the North Dakota road test?

The North Dakota knowledge test
How many questions are on the North Dakota permit test?
The North Dakota knowledge test has 25 questions, and you need 20 right (80%) to pass. Our full practice exam uses the same size and pass mark. Always confirm the current test with the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), Driver License Division.
Can I take the North Dakota knowledge test online?
Yes, at nd.knowtodrive.com. After passing online you still book an appointment at a Driver License office to pick up your permit, bringing your identity and address documents. (North Dakota Noncommercial Driver License Manual, p. 3)
What if I fail the North Dakota knowledge test?
You can't retake it the same day: the NDDOT allows one attempt per day, and each attempt has a small fee. Leaving the testing area or bringing a phone or notes into it counts as a failed test. (NDDOT: How to Apply for a Learner's Permit)
North Dakota driving rules
How does the North Dakota point system work?
Reaching 12 points leads to a 7-day suspension, plus 7 more days for each point over 11. You lose one point for every three months with no new points, or three by finishing an approved driver improvement course. (North Dakota Noncommercial Driver License Manual, p. 40)
What happens if a North Dakota driver under 18 gets too many points?
Six or more points, or an alcohol- or drug-related driving offense, cancels a minor's permit or license. You then start over: tests, a parent's consent, a new permit, the holding period and driver education. (NDDOT: Driver License (FAQs))
How much room must I give a bicycle in North Dakota?
At least three feet of passing space, and only when road and traffic conditions make it safe. Give more room in bad weather, and check over your shoulder before moving back. (North Dakota Noncommercial Driver License Manual, p. 33)
