The knowledge test
How many questions are on the Kansas permit test?
25 multiple-choice questions about traffic laws, road signs and pavement markings. You need a score of 80%, so 20 right answers, to pass. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 94)
Can I take the Kansas knowledge test online?
Yes. Kansas lets you take the non-commercial knowledge exam online and bring your passing result to the office, or you can test at a full-service driver's license office. A driver education course can also cover it. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 94)
What happens if I fail the Kansas written test?
You can try again from the next working day, after paying a small re-exam fee. You get four tries; after a fourth failure you wait at least six months from that attempt. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 14)
Your instruction permit
How old do I have to be for a Kansas instruction permit?
14 for a Class C permit. Under 16, a parent or guardian applies and signs an affidavit with you. You pass the vision and written tests, or show the DE-99 form from an approved driver education course you are taking. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 12)
Who has to ride with me on a Kansas permit?
A licensed adult who is at least 21 and has at least a year of driving experience, sitting in the front seat beside you. Nobody else may sit up front. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 12)
How long is a Kansas instruction permit valid?
One year from the day it is issued. You renew it by passing the written exam again. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 14)
Your first license
When can I get a restricted license in Kansas?
From 15, after holding a state-issued permit for a year (driver education permit time doesn't count). At 15 you also need an approved driver education course and 25 supervised hours; at 16, 50 hours with 10 at night. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 12)
What limits apply to a 16-year-old Kansas driver?
Alone from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., to and from school activities, work or religious activities at any time, or anywhere with a licensed adult 21 or older. Only one non-sibling passenger under 18, and no phone use except to report illegal activity or call for emergency help. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 13)
When do the Kansas teen driving limits end?
Once you have held the restricted license for six months or turned 17, whichever comes first, and kept a clean record, the age-related limits no longer apply. If no 50-hour affidavit is filed, or you have two or more moving violations before 16, they stay until 17. (Kansas Division of Vehicles: Graduated Driver License Requirements)
Do I have to keep a log of my Kansas practice hours?
The office doesn't ask for a log, only the affidavit signed by your parent or guardian, but keeping one is encouraged. Driver education time counts only when you are behind the wheel with an instructor aged 21 or older. (Kansas Division of Vehicles: Frequently Asked Questions About Teen Driving)
Alcohol and your license
What is the alcohol limit for Kansas drivers under 21?
Drivers under 21 can be arrested for alcohol impairment at .02. For everyone else the legal limit is .08, and refusing a breath or blood test means losing your license for a year. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 23–24)
