Step by step
Gather your documents
Bring proof of your name, age and Kansas address. A parent or guardian applies with you and signs an affidavit if you are under 16. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 11–12)
Pass the vision screening
You need at least 20/40 in one eye. If you need glasses or contacts to reach it, your license will say you must wear them. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 13)
Pass the written test, or bring a DE-99
Take the 25-question knowledge test at a full-service office or online, or bring the DE-99 form from the approved driver education course you are taking. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 12, 94)
Collect your permit
The permit is valid for one year and is renewed by retaking the written test. There is a fee; the office lists it. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 12, 14)
Fees and the full list of accepted documents change from time to time, so check them on the Kansas Department of Revenue, Division of Vehicles website before you go.
Rules while you have an instruction permit
- Drive only with a licensed adult aged 21 or older, with at least one year of driving experience, in the front seat. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 12)
- No one but the supervising adult may sit in the front seat. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 12)
- No phone or other wireless device while driving, except to report illegal activity or get emergency help. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 12)
- Everyone in the car buckles up; Kansas enforces it as a primary violation. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 16)
If you don't pass
If you fail the written test you may try again from the next working day. After four failures you wait at least six months. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 14)
What comes next
Under 17, hold a state-issued permit for a year; then a restricted license is possible from 15 (with driver education and 25 hours) or 16 (with 50 hours, 10 at night). From 17 you can test for an unrestricted license. (Kansas Driving Handbook, p. 12–13)
