Alaska Permit Test FAQ
Plain-English answers about the Alaska permit test, from the Alaska Driver Manual. Always check the official guide for the current rules.
Your Alaska permit
How old do I have to be for an Alaska instruction permit?
14. You pass a vision test and the written knowledge test, prove your identity, and if you are under 18 a parent or legal guardian gives consent on your application. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 8)
Who can supervise me on an Alaska instruction permit?
A licensed driver who is 21 or older and has at least a year of driving experience with the same class of vehicle, sitting in the seat next to you. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 8)
How long does an Alaska instruction permit last?
Two years. Each kind of permit can be renewed only once. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 8)
Who can sign parental consent in Alaska, and can it be taken back?
A parent or a court-appointed legal guardian signs for any applicant under 18, on the back of Form D1 or on the notarized Form 433 if they can't come. Only the person who signed can withdraw it, and the DMV then cancels the minor's permit or license. The signer may be held liable for the minor's careless driving. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 7–8)
The Alaska knowledge test
How many questions are on the Alaska permit test?
The Alaska knowledge test has 20 questions, and you need 16 right (80%) to pass. Our full practice exam uses the same size and pass mark. Always confirm the current test with the Alaska Department of Administration, Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
What if I fail the Alaska knowledge test?
You can take it again the next day. The test is drawn only from the Alaska Driver Manual: traffic laws, safe driving and highway signs. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 11)
Can I take the Alaska knowledge test online?
Yes. The DMV's online system at ak.knowtodrive.com lets you test at home on your own device, in several languages with audio, and shows your result right away. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 12)
Can someone read the Alaska knowledge test to me?
Yes, if you understand English but have trouble reading it: you may bring a person to read the questions aloud, but you must choose the answers yourself. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 11)
Your Alaska provisional license
When can I get an Alaska provisional license?
At 16, after holding a permit for six months. A parent, guardian or employer must certify 40 hours of driving practice (10 in harder conditions), you must have no traffic conviction in the last six months, and you must pass the road test. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 9)
What are the Alaska provisional license restrictions?
No passengers unless a parent, guardian or someone 21 or older is with you (brothers and sisters may ride), and no driving between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless such an adult is with you or you are driving to, from or for work by the most direct route. Drivers on an off-system license away from the main road network are exempt. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 10)
What happens if I break Alaska's provisional license rules?
It is an infraction with a $200 penalty, and two points go on your driving history. (Alaska DMV: Provisional License)
When do Alaska's provisional restrictions end?
At 18, or earlier: after six months with no convictions and no illegal alcohol or drug use, you can have them removed with a new parental consent and a new license (there is a fee). (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 10)
Alaska driving rules
What should I do after hitting a moose in Alaska?
Call the local police or the Alaska State Troopers. A big game animal killed or hurt in a crash belongs to the state, so a State Trooper or Fish and Wildlife officer must be told as soon as possible. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 72)
When must I pull over to let traffic pass in Alaska?
On a two-lane road outside an urban area, when five or more vehicles are lined up right behind you, pull off where it is safe and let them by. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 32)
