The basics, in plain English, from the Alaska Driver Manual.
From age 14 you can get an Alaska instruction permit by passing the vision and written tests; anyone under 18 also needs a parent's or guardian's consent. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 8)
While you learn, a licensed driver who is at least 21 and has a year of experience with your type of vehicle must sit beside you. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 8)
Drivers under 18 hold the permit for six months and log at least 40 hours of practice, 10 of them in harder conditions such as bad weather or darkness. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 9)
A provisional driver may not carry passengers unless a parent, guardian or someone 21 or older is aboard (siblings are fine), and may not drive from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. except with such an adult or for work. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 10)
Collecting 12 points in 12 months, or 18 points in 24 months, means a mandatory suspension or revocation, with no work license to fall back on. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 15)
A driver under 21 who drives after drinking any amount of alcohol loses their license through the DMV, starting at 30 days for a first offense. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 20)
14. You pass a vision test and the written knowledge test, prove your identity, and if you are under 18 a parent or legal guardian gives consent on your application. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 8)
A licensed driver who is 21 or older and has at least a year of driving experience with the same class of vehicle, sitting in the seat next to you. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 8)
You can take it again the next day. The test is drawn only from the Alaska Driver Manual: traffic laws, safe driving and highway signs. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 11)
At 16, after holding a permit for six months. A parent, guardian or employer must certify 40 hours of driving practice (10 in harder conditions), you must have no traffic conviction in the last six months, and you must pass the road test. (Alaska Driver Manual, p. 9)
Our questions are written from the guide (rEV. 10/2025). Always study the official handbook from the state. This handbook's printed page numbers repeat in places, so page numbers here are the PDF's own (as a PDF viewer shows them); tap one to open the official PDF at that page.
