The knowledge test
How many questions are on the Tennessee permit test?
The Tennessee knowledge test has 30 questions, and you need 24 right (80%) to pass. Our full practice exam uses the same size and pass mark. Always confirm the current test with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security.
What is on the Tennessee knowledge test?
Multiple-choice questions from Sections B and C of the manual: about 25% traffic signs and signals, 25% safe driving, 25% rules of the road and 25% alcohol and drugs. (Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, p. 21)
What happens if I fail the knowledge test?
You must wait at least one day before trying again, and you pay the application fee again. Anyone caught cheating fails and must wait 30 days to retest. (Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, p. 21–22)
How old do I have to be for a learner permit?
At least 15. You must pass the knowledge test and vision screening. (Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, p. 3)

Who has to ride with me on a learner permit?

What do I need for an Intermediate Restricted license?
Be 16, hold your permit for 180 days with fewer than 6 points, pass the road test, and have 50 hours of driving (10 at night) certified on form SF-1256. (Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, p. 14)
Can I use a hands-free phone with an intermediate license?
No. Drivers with a learner permit or intermediate license may not use any cell phone while driving. (Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, p. 18)

When must my headlights be on?
From 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise, when you can't see 200 feet ahead, and whenever rain or snow needs constant use of your wipers. (Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, p. 45)
