The test
How many questions are on the New Jersey permit test?
50 multiple-choice questions, plus a survey question about organ donation. You need 40 correct (80 percent) to pass. (New Jersey Driver Manual, p. 30–31)
What vision do I need?
20/50 or better, with or without corrective lenses. If you see with one eye only, that eye must meet 20/50 and a physician must sign documentation. (New Jersey Driver Manual, p. 31)
Can I take the knowledge test in another language?
Yes. It's offered in English, ASL and several other languages, with an oral version for people who can't read. Tell the MVC at least two weeks ahead if you need an interpreter. (New Jersey Driver Manual, p. 30)
Getting your permit
How old must I be to get a New Jersey permit?
16 for a special learner permit through an approved behind-the-wheel course, or 17 for an examination permit. First-time drivers 21 and older follow the adult GDL steps. (New Jersey Driver Manual, p. 15–17)
How many practice hours do I need before the road test?
Permit holders under 21 need at least six months of supervised driving with at least 50 hours, 10 of them in darkness. Drivers 21 and older need at least three months. (New Jersey Driver Manual, p. 15)
Who can supervise my practice driving?
An adult at least 21 years old with a valid New Jersey license and at least three years of driving experience, sitting in the front seat. (New Jersey Driver Manual, p. 18)
Rules for new drivers
Can a probationary driver drive at night?
Drivers under 21 with a permit or probationary license may not drive from 11:01 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., except with a signed work or religious exemption. (New Jersey Driver Manual, p. 18–19)
Do I need GDL decals?
Yes. Permit and probationary drivers under 21 must display two red reflective decals, one on the top left of each license plate. (New Jersey Driver Manual, p. 19)
