Step by step

  1. Gather your documents

Bring originals that prove who you are, your Social Security number and where you live; residency papers must show a street address, not a P.O. Box.

    • Proof of identity: a certified birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, or your immigration papers
    • Proof of a name change if your name differs, such as a marriage certificate or court order
    • Your Social Security card, a W-2 or a bank statement showing your number
    • Two Wyoming residency documents, such as a lease, property tax papers or a Wyoming bank statement

(Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 8)

  2. Get a parent's signature

Applicants under 18 need a release form signed by a legal parent or guardian. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 7)

  3. Pass the vision screening

You need 20/40 vision with both eyes, with or without glasses, and a horizontal field of at least 120 degrees. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 8)

  4. Pass the written knowledge test

Take it on the automated testing system at a driver exam station. It covers signs, signals, pavement markings and traffic laws from the manual. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 9)

  5. Pay the permit fee

An instruction permit has a fee; check the current amount with WYDOT Driver Services. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 11)

Fees and the full list of accepted documents change from time to time, so check them on the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT), Driver Services Program website before you go.

Rules while you have an instruction permit

  • Drive only with a licensed person aged 18 or older, licensed for your type of vehicle, in the front passenger seat. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 10)
  • Log 50 hours of driving, at least 10 of them at night, for a parent or guardian to certify before an intermediate license. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 14)
  • Everyone in the vehicle, including you, must wear a seat belt. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 29)
  • Never read or send a text message while driving. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 89)

If you don't pass

If you fail the written test, you may take it again the same day, but no more than twice in one day. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 9)

What comes next

At 16, an intermediate license lets you drive alone with night and passenger limits. Full privileges follow at 16½ with driver education and six months on the intermediate license, or at 17. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 7, 14)
