What's on the test

The questions come from the Wyoming Driver License Manual. They cover these areas; each links to free practice questions on it:

A study plan in five steps

  1. Read the Wyoming Driver License Manual

Everything on the test is in it. Read it chapter by chapter, slowly, and come back to the parts you find hard:

    • Who Needs a License, Classes and Restrictions
    • Ages, Documents, Vision and Tests
    • Permits, Renewals, Full, Restricted and Intermediate Licenses
    • Driving Records, Placards and Other Services
    • Suspensions, Revocations, SR-22 and Interlocks
    • Seat Belts and Child Restraints
    • Alcohol, Drugs and Driving
    • Stopped by Law Enforcement
    • Speed, Winter Roads and Right of Way
    • Stopping, Required Stops, Lanes and Turns
    • Backing, Passing and Parking
    • Interstate Driving
    • Sign Shapes, Lane Use, Pavement Markings and Railroads
    • Traffic Signs and Signals
    • Traffic Crashes
    • Equipment, Motorcycles, Pedestrians, Bicycles, Trucks and Animals
    • Defensive Driving (IPDE) and Space Cushions
    • Night, Weather and Emergencies
    • Hazards, Health and Cell Phones
    • Definitions

  2. Practice one topic at a time

After each chapter, practice that topic. You see the right answer and why straight away, with the handbook page to reread.

  3. Learn the road signs

Signs are quick points once you know them by shape and color. Study the signs one at a time, then test yourself on 20.

  4. Fix your weak spots

Your practice results are saved on your device. Practice my weak spots builds a round from the topics you miss most.

  5. Take the full practice exam

The full exam works like the real one: 25 questions, 20 to pass, no answers until the end. Keep going until you pass comfortably several times in a row, then review every question you missed.

Before test day

Instruction permit at 15

Wyoming issues an instruction permit from age 15 once you pass the vision screening and the written knowledge test. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 7)

Who sits beside you

A permit driver needs someone aged 18 or older, licensed for that kind of vehicle, riding in the front passenger seat. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 10)

Intermediate license at 16

With a permit and 50 hours of practice (10 of them at night) signed off by a parent or guardian, a 16-year-old can get an intermediate license. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 14)

Intermediate limits

No driving from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. without an exception form, at most one non-family rider under 18 unless an adult driver is along, and everyone belted. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 14)

Full privileges at 16½ or 17

Full privileges come at 17, or at 16½ after six months on an intermediate license plus an approved driver education course. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 7)

Move over or slow down

For a stopped emergency or highway work vehicle with lights on, change to the lane farthest away, or on a two-lane road posted 45 mph or more, drop 20 mph under the limit. (Wyoming Driver License Manual, p. 71–72)
