Step by step

  1. Enroll in driver education

Sign up for a driver education course that the state's Traffic Safety Bureau has approved; it covers DWI education and practice driving. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 1)

  2. Gather your documents

Bring proof of driver education enrollment, proof of identity and age, and two proofs of New Mexico residency to an MVD field office.

    • Proof of enrollment in (or completion of) approved driver education
    • Proof of identity and age
    • Two proofs of New Mexico residency
    • Proof of your identification number (REAL ID only)

(New Mexico MVD: Apply for a Learner's Permit)

  3. Get a parent's or guardian's consent

If you are under 18, a parent or guardian signs a consent form, and you sign the application together. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 1)

  4. Pass the vision and knowledge tests

You need at least 20/40 in one eye, with or without glasses, and a passing score on the written knowledge test. There is a permit fee; the MVD lists it. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 1, 28)

Fees and the full list of accepted documents change from time to time, so check them on the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, Motor Vehicle Division website before you go.

Rules while you have an instructional permit

  • Drive only with an approved instructor beside you, or with a licensed driver aged 21 or older who has held a license for three years or more. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 1)
  • Keep the permit for at least six months before applying for a provisional license. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 1)
  • Log at least 50 practice hours, 10 of them at night; a parent or guardian certifies them. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 1)
  • Stay free of traffic convictions for the 90 days before you apply for the provisional license. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 2)
  • Everyone in the car buckles up, and children under 12 ride in proper restraints. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 3)

If you don't pass

You may retake the knowledge exam twice in one week; after a third failure you wait six months from your first attempt. (New Mexico MVD: Knowledge (Written) Examination Changes)

What comes next

After six months on the permit, from 15½ you can test for a provisional license. Hold it for 12 months with a clean record, and you can apply for an unrestricted license. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 1–2)
