About the New Mexico permit test

The basics, in plain English, from the New Mexico Driver Manual.

  1. Permit at 15

You can apply for an instructional permit from age 15 if you are enrolled in an approved driver education course. You pass a vision test and the knowledge test, and a parent or guardian signs if you are under 18. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 1)

  2. 70% to pass the knowledge test

The MVD needs a score of at least 70% on the Class D written test. You can take it in English, Spanish, Tagalog, Italian, German, French, Vietnamese or Chinese. (New Mexico MVD Driver Procedures Manual: Road and Written Test Requirements)

  3. A supervisor 21+ for six months

On the permit you drive with an approved instructor, or a licensed driver aged 21 or older with at least three years of licensing, and you keep the permit for at least six months. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 1)

  4. Provisional license limits

From 15 years and 6 months, after 50 practice hours (10 at night), a provisional license lets you drive alone, but not from midnight to 5 a.m., and with at most one non-family passenger under 21 unless a licensed adult 21+ rides along. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 1–2)

  5. Three-second rule

New Mexico teaches a following gap of at least three seconds, and four seconds on slippery roads, behind motorcycles, when towing or near railroad crossings. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 23–24)

  6. Under 21: .02 is the limit

Adults can be arrested at a blood alcohol level of .08%. Drivers under 21 can be arrested at .02%, and refusing a test can cost a year of driving. (New Mexico Driver Manual, p. 29)

Our questions are written from the guide (version 11.19.19 (November 2019)). Always study the official handbook from the state. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages; tap one to open the official PDF at that page. A PDF viewer counts the cover too, so its page numbers run 3 higher.
