Step by step
Gather your documents
Bring originals or certified copies (no photocopies or notarized documents):
- Primary ID, such as a certified U.S. birth certificate or a U.S. passport
- Your Social Security number
- Proof of legal presence if you are not a U.S. citizen
- Driver education enrollment or completion proof (to apply at 15)
(Oklahoma Driver Manual, p. 4–6)
Sign up for driver education (at 15)
A public school course, a commercial driving school or the parent-taught program; at 16 you can apply without it. (Oklahoma Driver Manual, p. 6, 8)
Pass the written test and vision screening
Take the written test online or in person; a parent or guardian comes along if you are under 18. Then apply at a Service Oklahoma or licensed operator location, where your vision is checked. (Service Oklahoma: Written Knowledge Test)
Fees and the full list of accepted documents change from time to time, so check them on the Service Oklahoma website before you go.
Rules while you have a learner permit
- A licensed driver aged 21 or older sits beside you whenever you drive. (Oklahoma Driver Manual, p. 6)
- No texting, and no hand-held device use except in a life-threatening emergency, or you can lose the permit. (Oklahoma Driver Manual, p. 61)
- You and your front-seat passenger wear seat belts. (Oklahoma Driver Manual, p. 17)
If you don't pass
After a failed written test, wait at least one day before trying again. You can take the drive test three times after you become eligible, then once every 30 days. (Oklahoma Driver Manual, p. 6, 9)
What comes next
At 16, after 180 days with the permit, pass the drive test for an intermediate license (with the Work Zone Safe certificate); its time and passenger limits can come off after 6 months with driver education or a year without. (Oklahoma Driver Manual, p. 6)
