About the Minnesota permit test

The basics, in plain English, from the Minnesota Driver's Manual.

  1. 80% to pass

The written test mixes multiple-choice and true-or-false questions on Minnesota traffic laws and road signs; you need a score of 80 percent, and you may try only once a day. (Minnesota Driver's Manual, p. 10)

  2. Permit from 15

Teens can get an instruction permit at 15 after 30 hours of driver education classroom time and signing up for behind-the-wheel lessons. (Minnesota Driver's Manual, p. 13)

  3. Six months, then the road test

Hold the permit at least six months (three months from age 19) and, under 18, log 50 supervised hours with 15 at night, or 40 if a parent takes the parent class. (Minnesota Driver's Manual, p. 14)

  4. Three-second rule

Leave at least three seconds behind the car ahead, and four or five when roads are poor or you drive a longer vehicle. (Minnesota Driver's Manual, p. 73)

  5. Stop 20 feet from a school bus

Stop at least 20 feet away from a school bus with flashing red lights, from either direction, unless it is across a divided roadway. (Minnesota Driver's Manual, p. 42)

  6. Not a drop under 21

Drivers under 21 may not have any detectable alcohol; a first conviction suspends the license for 30 days. (Minnesota Driver's Manual, p. 95)

Minnesota permit test FAQ

How old do I have to be for a Minnesota instruction permit?

At least 15. Under 18 you also need the 30 classroom hours of driver education (or 15 hours into a concurrent course) and enrollment in behind-the-wheel lessons, plus a parent's or guardian's approval. (Minnesota Driver's Manual, p. 13)

Who must sit beside me while I drive on a permit?

A licensed driver in the front passenger seat: aged 21 or older if you are under 18, or 18 or older once you are 18. (Minnesota Driver's Manual, p. 13–14)

When can I get a provisional license?

At 16 or older, after six months with your permit and no moving or alcohol violations, driver education finished, a signed driving log and a passed road test. (Minnesota Driver's Manual, p. 14)

What are the night and passenger limits on a provisional license?

For the first six months: no driving from midnight to 5 a.m. (with some exceptions) and only one passenger under 20. For the next six months: up to three passengers under 20. Family members and a parent or guardian riding along are exceptions. (Minnesota Driver's Manual, p. 14–15)

Our questions are written from the guide (june 2026). Always study the official handbook from the state. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages; tap one to open the official PDF at that page. A PDF viewer counts the cover too, so its page numbers run 3 higher.
