Step by step
Book your test with the Kentucky State Police
All written and road tests are by appointment through the state police's online scheduler; new slots open weekday mornings and the schedule runs three weeks ahead. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 13)
Gather your documents
Bring originals (photocopies are refused):
- An original birth certificate or certified copy
- Your Social Security card
- One proof of Kentucky residency (two for a REAL ID)
- Under 18: the School Compliance Verification Form from your school
- Under 18: a parent or legal guardian to sign and accept financial responsibility
(Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 5)
Pass the vision and written tests
The vision screening needs 20/40, with or without glasses, and the written test on rules, procedures and highway signs needs a score of 80%. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 10–11)
Collect your permit
Return to the Transportation Cabinet's regional office for your permit. Drivers under 21 get a distinctive under-21 permit, and there is a permit fee. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 4–5)
Fees and the full list of accepted documents change from time to time, so check them on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of Driver Licensing website before you go.
Rules while you have a learner's permit
- Drive only with a licensed driver aged 21 or older in the front passenger seat, and carry your permit. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 5)
- Under 18, carry no more than one unrelated passenger younger than 20. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 5)
- Under 18, stay off the road from midnight to 6 a.m. unless you can show good cause. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 5)
- Zero alcohol tolerance applies under 21 (.02), and a traffic violation adds at least 180 days before you can move up. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 6)
If you don't pass
If you fail the road skills test, wait at least one week before trying again, and use the time to practice. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 6)
What comes next
Teens who are at least 16 and have held the permit 180 days take the road test for an intermediate license, then reach a full license at 17. (Kentucky Transportation Cabinet: Graduated Driver Licensing Program)
This guide is a free learning aid based on the Kentucky Driver Manual (Updated July 23, 2026), not official advice. Rules, documents and fees can change: always confirm with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of Driver Licensing before you go.
