About the Kentucky permit test

The basics, in plain English, from the Kentucky Driver Manual.

  1. Permit at 15

At 15 you can take the vision and written knowledge tests with the Kentucky State Police; under 18, a parent or legal guardian signs your application. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 4–5)

  2. 180 days and 60 hours

Teens keep the learner's permit for at least 180 days and log 60 hours of practice, 10 of them at night, before the road test. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 5)

  3. Intermediate license at 16

After 180 days on the permit and once you are 16, a road test earns the intermediate license; 180 more days, age 17 and a 4-hour driver education course lead to a full license. (Kentucky Transportation Cabinet: Graduated Driver Licensing Program)

  4. No driving midnight to 6 a.m.

Teen permit and intermediate drivers stay off the road between midnight and 6 a.m. without good cause, and under 18 may carry only one unrelated passenger younger than 20. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 5–7)

  5. Four-second following gap

Kentucky teaches at least four seconds between you and the vehicle ahead, with more at night, in bad weather and behind trucks or motorcycles. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 51)

  6. Stop for school and church buses

Traffic from both directions stops for a stopped school or church bus; only the opposite direction of a divided road with four or more lanes may keep going. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 44)

Kentucky permit test FAQ

How old do I have to be for a Kentucky learner's permit?

At least 15. You book the vision and written knowledge tests with the Kentucky State Police, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or legal guardian to sign the application and accept responsibility. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 4–5)

Who can supervise a Kentucky permit driver?

A licensed driver who is 21 or older, sitting in the front passenger seat the whole time. That includes the drive to your road test appointment. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 5–6)

When can a Kentucky teen get an intermediate license?

After holding the permit at least 180 days, logging 60 practice hours (10 at night) signed by a parent, and turning 16. You then pass the road skills test with the Kentucky State Police. (Kentucky Transportation Cabinet: Graduated Driver Licensing Program)

How many points lead to a Kentucky license hearing?

Twelve points within two years, or seven for a driver under 18. Points drop off two years after the conviction, but the conviction stays on your record for five years. (Kentucky Driver Manual, p. 17)

Our questions are written from the guide (updated July 23, 2026). Always study the official handbook from the state. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages; tap one to open the official PDF at that page. A PDF viewer counts the cover too, so its page numbers run 8 higher.
