The basics, in plain English, from the Montana Driver Manual.
Teens in a state-approved traffic education program can get a learner permit at 14½. At a driver exam station the youngest age is 15 with traffic education, or 16 without it. (Montana Driver Manual, p. 8)
Under 18, hold the permit for at least six months and log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night, before the first-year restricted license. (Montana Driver Manual, p. 7–8)
On a first-year restricted license you may not drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., except for emergencies, farm work, school, church, work or a purpose your parent approves. (Montana Driver Manual, p. 8)
Unless a licensed adult rides along, the first six months allow one unrelated passenger under 18, and the next six months allow three. (Montana Driver Manual, p. 8)
Montana makes the driver responsible for buckling up every person in the car. Children up to age 6 and 60 pounds ride in a child safety seat. (Montana Driver Manual, p. 19–20)
Before any license you pass a vision test showing at least 20/40 in one eye or better, with glasses or contacts if you need them. (Montana Driver Manual, p. 70)
14½ if you are taking (or have finished) a state-approved traffic education course, which issues the permit. At a driver exam station you can get one at 15 after approved traffic education, or at 16 without it. Online courses don't count. (Montana Driver Manual, p. 8)
A licensed parent, guardian or responsible adult, or another licensed adult driver they have authorized. The supervising adult sits in the seat beside you, and everyone in the car wears a seat belt. (Montana Driver Manual, p. 7)
After six months on the learner permit, 50 supervised hours (10 at night) and no traffic violations or alcohol or drug offenses in those six months. Bring the signed GDL certification form and your documents, then pass the drive test. (Montana Driver Manual, p. 7–8)
Everyone wears a seat belt, no driving from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. (with a few exceptions), and without a licensed adult along only one unrelated passenger under 18 for the first six months, then three. A first violation means 20 to 60 hours of community service; a second, a six-month suspension. (Montana Driver Manual, p. 8)
Our questions are written from the guide (revised April 2024). Always study the official handbook from the state. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages; tap one to open the official PDF at that page. A PDF viewer counts the cover too, so its page numbers run 10 higher.
