About the Louisiana permit test

The basics, in plain English, from the Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide.

  1. Learner's permit at 15

At 15, after 30 hours of classroom driver education and 8 hours behind the wheel, you can earn a learner's permit by passing the vision and knowledge tests. (Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide, p. 7)

  2. 40 questions, 80% to pass

The Louisiana permit knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions; you need at least 80%, so 32 right answers. (Louisiana OMV: Permits)

  3. 180 days and 50 hours

Keep the learner's permit at least 180 days and log 50 hours of supervised driving (15 of them at night) before the intermediate license at 16. (Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide, p. 7)

  4. Intermediate license limits

Intermediate drivers stay off the road from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. unless a licensed adult 21+ or sibling 18+ rides along, and after 6 p.m. may carry only one non-family passenger under 21. (Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide, p. 7)

  5. Stop 30 feet from a school bus

Louisiana drivers stop at least 30 feet away from a school bus that is loading or unloading children, whether behind it or meeting it. (Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide, p. 88)

  6. 0.02 under 21

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08 at 21 or older, but only 0.02 for drivers 20 and younger and 0.04 in a commercial vehicle. (Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide, p. 123)

Louisiana permit test FAQ

How old do I have to be for a Louisiana learner's permit?

At least 15. Before the permit you complete 30 classroom hours and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, then pass a vision screening and the knowledge test. (Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide, p. 7)

Who can supervise me on a Louisiana learner's permit?

A licensed adult who is at least 21, or a licensed brother or sister who is at least 18. (Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide, p. 7)

What are the limits on a Louisiana intermediate license?

No driving from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. without a licensed adult 21 or older or a sibling 18 or older in the car, and from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. no more than one passenger under 21 who is not immediate family. You keep it until you turn 17. (Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide, p. 7)

I'm 18 and new to driving. What does Louisiana require?

You don't have to go through the graduated program. Complete a 38-hour driver education course, or a 6-hour pre-licensing course plus 8 hours behind the wheel, then apply for a learner's permit or a full Class E license. (Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide, p. 7)

Our questions are written from the guide (dPSMV2052 (R08/25)). Always study the official handbook from the state. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages; tap one to open the official PDF at that page. A PDF viewer counts the cover too, so its page numbers run 5 higher.
