The basics, in plain English, from the Connecticut Driver's Manual.
Connecticut issues a learner's permit from age 16 once you pass a vision test and the 25-question knowledge test; you need 20 right answers. (Connecticut Driver's Manual, p. 5)
Since January 1, 2026, every learner's permit applicant completes the free online Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course and brings its certificate to the knowledge test. (Connecticut DMV: Take the knowledge and vision test)
Teens trained by a commercial driving school or a high school program wait 120 days after the permit is issued; home-trained teens wait 180 days. Adults hold the permit at least 90 days. (Connecticut Driver's Manual, p. 6–7)
For the first six months a newly licensed 16- or 17-year-old may carry only an instructor, a parent or guardian, or one qualified adult trainer; months seven to twelve add immediate family. (Connecticut Driver's Manual, p. 8)
Licensed 16- and 17-year-olds may not drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless traveling for work, school, religious activities, a medical need or the Safe Ride Program. (Connecticut Driver's Manual, p. 8)
Adults may talk only hands-free; drivers who are 16 or 17 may not use any phone or mobile electronic device behind the wheel, hands-free included. (Connecticut Driver's Manual, p. 13)
25 questions, and you need 20 of them right to pass. It is based on the Connecticut Driver's Manual, and you must pass it (with a vision test) before the permit is issued. (Connecticut Driver's Manual, p. 5)
A free online course of under an hour. Since January 1, 2026, everyone applying for a Connecticut learner's permit must finish it and show the completion certificate at the knowledge test. (Connecticut DMV: Take the knowledge and vision test)
At least 16. The permit stays valid for two years from the day it is issued, or until you get your license if that comes first. (Connecticut Driver's Manual, p. 5)
120 days after the permit is issued if you finished driver education at a commercial driving school or a high school program, or 180 days if you trained at home. (Connecticut Driver's Manual, p. 6)
Our questions are written from the guide (revised March 2023). Always study the official handbook from the state. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages; tap one to open the official PDF at that page. A PDF viewer counts the cover too, so its page numbers run 2 higher.
