The basics, in plain English, from the Alabama Driver Manual.
At 15 you can take the knowledge test for a learner license (Class D with a "Y" restriction) and drive with a licensed adult aged 21 or older, or a driving instructor, beside you. (Alabama Driver Manual, p. 9)
Drivers under 18 hold the learner license for six months (or until they turn 18) before taking the road test; a 16-year-old brings a parent or guardian. (Alabama Driver Manual, p. 10–11)
Before the restricted license, a parent, grandparent, guardian or driving instructor signs that you drove at least 50 hours, unless you finished an approved driver education course. (ALEA: Graduated Driver License)
Alabama teaches a two-second following distance, stretched to four or five seconds when the road or weather is poor. (Alabama Driver Manual, p. 36)
Traffic from both directions stops at least 20 feet from a school or church bus with red lights flashing, except across a divided highway of four or more lanes. (Alabama Driver Manual, p. 61–62)
Drivers under 21 break the DUI law with a blood alcohol level of 0.02% or more; for adults the limit is 0.08%. (Alabama Driver Manual, p. 33)
You can get a learner license at 15 by passing the knowledge test. Applicants under 19 also bring the Student Enrollment/Exclusion form (DL-1-93) showing they are in school or have graduated. (Alabama Driver Manual, p. 8–9)
At 15: a licensed driver aged 21 or older, or a licensed or certified driving instructor. Once you turn 16, any licensed driver may sit beside you. (Alabama Driver Manual, p. 9)
At 16 or older, after holding your learner license for six months (or once you turn 18). You hand in the learner license at the road test, and a 16-year-old must come with a parent or guardian. (Alabama Driver Manual, p. 10–11)
At 16, or at 17 with a license under six months old: at most one passenger outside the family, no driving from midnight to 6 a.m. (with some exceptions), and no handheld phone or other device. (Alabama Driver Manual, p. 84)
Our questions are written from the guide (november 2024). Always study the official handbook from the state. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages; tap one to open the official PDF at that page. A PDF viewer counts the cover too, so its page numbers run 2 higher.
