What's on the test

The questions come from the South Carolina Driver's License Manual. They cover these areas; each links to free practice questions on it:

A study plan in five steps

  1. Read the South Carolina Driver's License Manual

Everything on the test is in it. Read it chapter by chapter, slowly, and come back to the parts you find hard:

    • The Driver's License: Permits, GDL and Tests
    • The Driver's License: Moving, Renewal and Points
    • State Laws and Rules of the Road
    • Be in Shape to Drive
    • Before You Drive
    • Basic Driving
    • Rules of the Road: Right-of-Way and Signals
    • Rules of the Road: Signs and Pavement Markings
    • General Driving: Turns, Intersections and School Buses
    • General Driving: Parking, Highways and Passing
    • Safe Driving Tips
    • Emergency Situations and Avoiding Collisions
    • Sharing the Road
    • Special Driving Situations

  2. Practice one topic at a time

After each chapter, practice that topic. You see the right answer and why straight away, with the handbook page to reread.

  3. Learn the road signs

Signs are quick points once you know them by shape and color. Study the signs one at a time, then test yourself on 20.

  4. Fix your weak spots

Your practice results are saved on your device. Practice my weak spots builds a round from the topics you miss most.

  5. Take the full practice exam

The full exam works like the real one: 30 questions, 24 to pass, no answers until the end. Keep going until you pass comfortably several times in a row, then review every question you missed.

Before test day

Permit from 15

You can get a beginner's permit at 15 by passing the vision and knowledge tests. (South Carolina Driver's License Manual, p. 1-4)

180 days on the permit

Drivers 17 and under keep the permit at least 180 days before any license; from 18, the minimum is 30 days. (South Carolina Driver's License Manual, p. 1-4 to 1-5)

40 hours of practice

At 15 or 16 you log 40 practice hours, 10 of them after dark, and finish driver's education (8 hours in class, 6 behind the wheel). (South Carolina Driver's License Manual, p. 1-5 to 1-6)

Hands off the phone

Under the Hands-Free and Distracted Driving Act, no driver may hold or prop up a phone, text or watch video; earpieces and smartwatches for voice calls are fine. (South Carolina Driver's License Manual, p. 3-5)

Four-second gap

South Carolina teaches a following distance of at least four seconds, with more at night, in bad weather and behind large vehicles. (South Carolina Driver's License Manual, p. 8-6 to 8-7)

School buses on two-lane roads

On a two-lane road, traffic going both ways stops for a school bus with red or amber lights flashing; on a four-lane road only traffic behind it stops. (South Carolina Driver's License Manual, p. 7-8 to 7-10)
