The basics, in plain English, from the Mississippi Driver's License Manual.
From age 15 you can get a Regular Learner's Permit by passing the same computerized exam the license needs. It is good for two years, and a licensed driver aged 21 or older must sit in the front seat next to you. (Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p. 13)
Teens keep the permit for a full year before trading up to a Class R license at 16. Turn 17 first and you can apply straight away; first-time applicants of 17 or older can get both on the same day. (Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p. 13–15)
Under 17, a parent, teacher or guardian signs an affidavit saying they have watched you drive for at least 50 hours. From July 1, 2027, a certified driver's education course is also required. (Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p. 15–17)
The Driver Service Bureau gives no skills (road) test for a regular license at this time; you pass the knowledge and vision exams and bring the signed road test waiver. (Mississippi Driver Service Bureau: Regular Driver's License (Class R))
Stop at least 10 feet from a school bus with red lights flashing or its stop sign out, whichever way you are going. Only traffic on the far side of a divided highway with four or more lanes keeps moving. (Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p. 58)
Mississippi bans writing, sending or reading texts and using social media on a hand-held phone while you drive. The manual suggests a hands-free device if you must call. (Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p. 23)
Multiple-choice questions drawn from the Driver's License Manual, with a focus on Mississippi traffic laws, safe driving and what you need to get a license. Signs and signals are part of it too. (Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p. 17–18)
In person at a driver license station. Phones, earbuds, smart watches and other electronics stay out of the testing area; anyone caught with them or cheating has the test cancelled and must wait six months to try again. (Mississippi Driver Service Bureau: Regular Learner's Permit)
At least 15. Under 18 you also show that you are enrolled in school with a Certification of Attendance no more than 30 days old (a marriage license works instead if you are married). (Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p. 13–16)
At 16, once you have held the learner's permit for a year, or as soon as you turn 17. Someone who gets the permit at 15½ can move up at 16½. First-time applicants who are 17 or older can apply for the license directly. (Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p. 13–15)
Our questions are written from the guide (revised December 2024). Always study the official handbook from the state. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages; tap one to open the official PDF at that page.
