The basics, in plain English, from the Maine Driver's License Manual.
You can get a learner's permit at 15 by passing the vision screening and the written knowledge test. Under 18, you also take an approved driver education course. (Maine Driver's License Manual, p. 1-2)
On a permit, drive only with a licensed driver who is at least 20, has held a license for 2 years, and sits in the seat next to you. (Maine Driver's License Manual, p. 1-2)
Under 21, hold the permit for 6 months and log 70 hours of driving (10 at night) before the road test. (Maine Driver's License Manual, p. 1-3)
A new driver under 18 can't use a phone, can't drive from midnight to 5 a.m., and carries only family unless a qualified adult rides along, for 270 days after the road test. (Maine Driver's License Manual, p. 1-4)
Maine teaches a following distance of at least four seconds, with more on slick roads, at night and behind motorcycles, trucks and trailers. (Maine Driver's License Manual, p. 8-11 to 8-12)
Under 21, driving with any amount of alcohol in your body costs your license for at least a year; from 21, 0.08 is the OUI limit. (Maine Driver's License Manual, p. 3-14)
At least 15. You pass the written knowledge exam and a vision screening at a BMV branch, and if you are under 18 you also complete an approved driver education course. (Maine Driver's License Manual, p. 1-2)
A licensed driver who is at least 20 years old, has held a valid license for at least 2 years, is licensed for the class of vehicle you are driving, and sits in the seat beside you. (Maine Driver's License Manual, p. 1-2)
Be at least 16 with an approved driver education course (or 18 without one). Under 21, hold your permit for 6 months and complete 70 hours of driving, 10 of them at night, with a parent, guardian or spouse certifying the hours. Then pass the road test in a registered, inspected car you bring. (Maine Driver's License Manual, p. 1-3 to 1-4)
For 270 days after you pass the road test: no driving between midnight and 5 a.m., no phone or handheld device use while driving, and no passengers except immediate family unless a licensed driver aged 20 or older with 2 years of experience sits beside you. Breaking a limit means a suspension and another 270 days of limits. (Maine Driver's License Manual, p. 1-4)
Our questions are written from the guide (rev. 4/24). Always study the official handbook from the state. Page numbers are the ones printed on the handbook pages: section, then page (6-1 is page 1 of section 6); tap one to open the official PDF at that page.
