What's on the test

The questions come from the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide. They cover these areas; each links to free practice questions on it:

A study plan in five steps

  1. Read the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide

Everything on the test is in it. Read it chapter by chapter, slowly, and come back to the parts you find hard:

    • The Driver's License
    • Arkansas Law
    • Work Zone Safety
    • Traffic Signals, Signs and Railroad Crossings
    • Lanes, Turns and Crosswalks
    • Right of Way, Roundabouts and Parking
    • Safe Driving
    • See and Be Seen: Lights, Signals and Speed
    • See and Be Seen: Visibility, Following and Passing
    • Tractor-Trailer Rigs
    • Sharing the Road with Bicycles and Motorcycles
    • Driving Fitness
    • Emergencies
    • Skills Test Guidelines

    Open the official handbook (PDF)

  2. Practice one topic at a time

After each chapter, practice that topic. You see the right answer and why straight away, with the handbook page to reread.

  3. Learn the road signs

Signs are quick points once you know them by shape and color. Study the signs one at a time, then test yourself on 20.

  4. Fix your weak spots

Your practice results are saved on your device. Practice my weak spots builds a round from the topics you miss most.

  5. Take the full practice exam

The full exam works like the real one: 25 questions, 20 to pass, no answers until the end. Keep going until you pass comfortably several times in a row, then review every question you missed.

Before test day

Instruction permit at 14

Arkansas teens can get an instruction permit at 14 by passing the knowledge and vision tests. It is good for two years and lets you practice with a licensed driver of 21 or older beside you. (Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, p. 3)

Learner's, then intermediate

After the skills test, 14- and 15-year-olds get a learner's license and drive only with a licensed adult of 21 or older; at 16 and 17 it is an intermediate license with its own limits. (Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, p. 3–4)

Night and passenger limits

An intermediate license holder may carry only one unrelated minor passenger without a licensed adult of 21 or older up front, and has an 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. driving limit with a few exceptions. (Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, p. 4)

Phones depend on your age

Under 18, no phone use at all while driving, even hands-free. From 18 to 20, hands-free only. Texting while driving is banned at every age. (Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, p. 46)

Stop for school buses

Traffic in every lane stops for a school bus with flashing red lights, unless the bus is on the other side of a median at least 20 feet wide. (Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, p. 12–13)

Left lane is for passing

On a multilane highway, Arkansas law keeps you out of the left lane except to pass, to exit on the left, or when the other lanes are closed or unsafe. (Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, p. 63)
