The test
How many questions are on the Washington permit test?
The Washington knowledge test has 40 questions, and you need 32 right (80%) to pass. Our full practice exam uses the same size and pass mark. Always confirm the current test with the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL).
What exams do I need for a Washington license?
Two: the Driving Knowledge Exam on the rules of the road, then the Driving Skills Exam. You must pass the knowledge exam first, and its score is valid for two years. (Washington Driver Guide, p. 32 (sections 1.11–1.12))
Where can I take the exams?
At an approved driver training school's exam location, or by appointment at a driver licensing office (booked in License Express). (Washington Driver Guide, p. 33 (section 1.12))
What vehicle do I need for the skills exam?
A legally licensed and registered vehicle with proof of current liability insurance, in safe condition, with working brake lights, signal lights and seat belts. Only you and the examiner may be inside. (Washington Driver Guide, p. 32–33 (sections 1.11–1.12))
Getting your license
When can I get an instruction permit?
At 15 if you're enrolling in a driver training course (apply 1 to 10 days before it starts), or after you turn 15½ by passing the knowledge exam. You need a WDL number first. (Washington Driver Guide, p. 25 (section 1.8))
What do I need for a license at 16 or 17?
6 months on the permit, an approved traffic safety course, both exams, 40 hours of day and 10 of night driving with a licensed driver of 3+ years' experience, and no violations for 6 months. (Washington Driver Guide, p. 26 (section 1.8))
I'm 18 or older. How can I get my first license?
Transfer an out-of-state license, pass both exams, get a permit and practice with a driver of 5+ years' experience before the skills exam, or get an exam waiver and take a driver training course. (Washington Driver Guide, p. 28 (section 1.8))
Rules for new drivers
What are the intermediate license limits?
First 6 months: no passengers under 20 except immediate family; after that, no more than 3. No driving 1–5 a.m. unless with a parent, guardian or licensed driver 25+, and no phone use even hands-free except to report an emergency. (Washington Driver Guide, p. 28–29 (section 1.8))
What are the alcohol and THC limits for drivers under 21?
Under 21, a BAC of 0.02 or more, or any active THC, brings DUI consequences. For drivers 21 and older the limits are 0.08 BAC and 5 nanograms of THC. (Washington Driver Guide, p. 37–38 (section 1.15))
