A study plan in five steps
Read the Indiana Driver's Manual
Everything on the test is in it. Read it chapter by chapter, slowly, and come back to the parts you find hard:
- Obtaining a New Credential
- Restrictions and Endorsements
- Indicators, Watercraft and Parking Placards
- Renewing, Amending or Replacing a Credential
- Points, Suspensions and Insurance
- Traffic Signs and Signals
- Safe Vehicle Operation: Lanes, Turns, Speed and Conditions
- Safe Vehicle Operation: Work Zones, Railroads, Sharing the Road and Parking
- Accidents and Emergency Situations
Practice one topic at a time
After each chapter, practice that topic. You see the right answer and why straight away, with the handbook page to reread.
Learn the road signs
Signs are quick points once you know them by shape and color. Study the signs one at a time, then test yourself on 20.
Fix your weak spots
Your practice results are saved on your device. Practice my weak spots builds a round from the topics you miss most.
Take the full practice exam
The full exam works like the real one: 50 questions, 42 to pass, no answers until the end. Keep going until you pass comfortably several times in a row, then review every question you missed.
Before test day
Permit from 15
At 15 you can get a learner's permit if you're enrolled in a BMV-licensed driver education course; from 16 you need only the documents, the vision screening and the knowledge exam. (Indiana Driver's Manual, p. 3)
A test in two parts
The knowledge exam is multiple choice, with a traffic signs part and a traffic maneuvers part. (Indiana Driver's Manual, p. 5)
180 days with your permit
You hold the learner's permit at least 180 days and log 50 hours of supervised practice, 10 at night, before the driver's license. (Indiana Driver's Manual, p. 9)
Probationary until 21
A license issued before 21 is probationary, with passenger and nighttime limits in the first months. (Indiana Driver's Manual, p. 10)
Hands off the phone
Indiana drivers may use a phone only hands-free, or to call 911 in an emergency. (Indiana Driver's Manual, p. 45)
Move over
Change lanes away from stopped emergency, tow, maintenance and disabled vehicles with flashing lights, or slow to 10 mph under the limit. (Indiana Driver's Manual, p. 51)
